While in England we visited Bletchley Park, where the allies decoded the Nazi messages sent with enigma machines.
Benedict portrayed Alan Turing. His bombe machine was a thing to behold.
They explained how the enigma codes were sent and how Mr. Turing's machine worked. It made me feel like a complete moron. But look-here is Alan Turing's teddy bear.
Here is a replica of his machine, on the set where they filmed the movie. It was in the pub on the Bletchley site. Hundreds of workers lived and worked here and it cannot be understated the impact they had on helping the allies win the war. At one point 9000 people worked here and many worked 16 hours a day deciphering, cataloging, and communicating messages snooped from the enemy.
Winston Churchill stood on this rock and talked to the workers.
There are lots of interesting displays and historical artifacts .
We have not yet seen The Imitation Game. Now we are ready. Visiting Bletchely park was Jo Ellen's idea. Good call!
This is the sixth blog post of the journey. For previous posts scroll down or see "blog archive" at the top of this page.
Lots more to come: London, York, and onward to Scotland. And I have more harp video footage to add. See you soon...
